Entrepreneur puts bedbugs on ice

There are three ways to kill bedbugs. Four if you count stomping on them.

The first is to poison them. Second is to broil them -- room by room with special steamers, or whole-house with propane heaters.

The new third option? Go Canadian on 'em.

Lorne Chadnick, an Ottawa businessman, has made a business out of stopping the appleseed-sized bugs that crave blood and rank maybe one rung down from body lice on the list of insects-that-alarm-us.

"I went from sales of zero two years ago to, this year, I'll probably do $2 million," he says, noting he started with bedbug-proof mattress covers.

Now he's promoting Cryonite, a system developed in Sweden to give bedbugs the chill pill.

The system uses carbon dioxide sprayed through a patented gun as "snow" -- often called dry ice -- that quickly turns to gas and disappears, but not before flash-freezing bed bugs, their eggs and everything else it contacts.

After securing Health Canada's blessing for Cryonite this spring -- "it took over two years" -- Chadnick's Rest Assured company has started to offer the gear to licensed pest-control operators in Canada. Its use is unrestricted in the U.S., where he also has distribution rights, and he can sell directly to property managers and others in the bedbug battle.

Cryonite's weakness is the speed with which the dry ice dissipates. But it's non-toxic and, because CO2 changes from solid to gas with no liquid, it can be directed into electrical outlets and electronic equipment with no shock hazard.
