Athlone Primary School stands proudly at the Northern entrance to Pietermaritzburg. The school was first established in 1959 and since it's first day has provided the children that have passed through the gates with an enviable education and a myriad of happy memories. We are a feeder school to all of the major high schools in the KwaZulu-Natal region , both private and public.

City Printing Works has a long and esteemed history. It is the product of City Printing Works, founded by the Russell family in 1915, and L Backhouse Printers, which was founded by Laurie Backhouse Snr. in 1927. Laurie Backhouse Senior's two sons, Laurie Backhouse Jnr. and Rae Backhouse, joined their father in the business after the Second World War, Laurie taking responsibility for sales and administration, and Rae taking responsibility for production, and the technical side of the business. Rae retired in 1997, and shortly thereafter sold his share in the business to Laurie. The third generation of Backhouses, Laurie's two sons, Mark and Craig, both joined L Backhouse Printers in 1975.

The museum was started in 1912 as a tribute to the Voortrekkers, mostly Dutch-speaking farmers who left the Cape in 1837-1838 in order to escape British rule. Voortrekker history is still displayed in the Voortrekker Complex, i.e. the historic Church of the Vow, the Andries Pretorius House and the E.G. Jansen Extension. However, the main building of the Museum (formerly the old Longmarket Street Girls School), now features a variety of cultural history exhibitions.
